PALO ALTO – A 62-year-old Palo Alto man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting a student with an air rifle, authorities said.
The victim did not require medical attention, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a statement.
The shooting was reported about 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Stratford School at 870 North California Ave. Employees told dispatchers an elementary school-aged student had been hit in the back with a BB while on the school athletic fields during lunch.
The suspect was identified as a neighbor who had been seen looking over his fence just prior to the shooting.
Police said the neighbor fired a single shot from his backyard. Officers arrested him just before 2 p.m. and recovered an air rifle at his home.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
“While police have reason to believe the suspect intentionally discharged the air rifle and intended to strike a student, there is no reason to believe the suspect intentionally targeted this particular student,” police said.
The suspect was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse and creating a disruption on a school campus.
