St. Mary’s edges St. Joseph Notre Dame

  • The St. Mary’s High girls tennis team swept the doubles matches to defeat St. Joseph Notre Dame 4-3 on Oct. 30. The Panthers team of Megan Nehme and Brianna Lozano won the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, 6-0. St. Joseph Notre Dame’s Aysha Hayes and Savannah Fisher won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches in straight sets.

    Paris Austin picks Boise State

  • Bishop O’Dowd High boys basketball player Paris Austin announced on Twitter on Nov. 1 that he had orally committed to Boise State. “I am truly blessed to have this opportunity and to be able to play at a high level,” he said in the tweet. Rivals.com lists the 5-foot-11 point guard as a three-star player. He was selected first-team all-Bay Area News Group East Bay last season as a junior.

    Alameda wins two WACC matches

  • The Alameda High girls volleyball team won a pair of competitive matches last week. On Oct. 28, the Hornets edged San Lorenzo 19-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-27, 15-6 at San Lorenzo. Janelle Ah-Hing had 11 kills, 17 assists, eight aces, two blocks and nine digs in the victory, and teammate Sophia Vetter added nine kills, three aces and 13 digs. Carson Mulholland added six kills and five blocks for the Hornets. In a 25-22, 25-21, 26-24 win over Mt. Eden at Alameda, Ah-Hing contributed nine kills, seven assists, two aces, three blocks and seven digs, and teammate Kalina White added six kills and five digs. Middle hitter Olivia Orahood also served four aces in the victory.

  • St. Mary’s at Pinole Valley, football, Nov. 7, 7 p.m. — The Panthers aim to enter the North Coast Section Division IV playoffs next week with a winning streak.
  • Castro Valley at Bishop O’Dowd, football, Nov. 7, 7 p.m. — This final regular-season game is essentially a playoff game for the Dragons, who need a win over the Trojans to qualify for consideration for the North Coast Section Division III playoffs.
  • Alameda at Piedmont, football, Nov. 7, 7 p.m. — Alameda needs a win to get consideration for the North Coast Section Division II playoffs, while the Highlanders are looking to wrap up an undefeated regular season.

  • Calvin Nunley, El Cerrito football — Nunley made an impressive leaping catch for a 67-yard touchdown in the Gauchos’ 21-10 loss to Salesian on Nov. 1.
  • Connor Garrett, Piedmont football — Garrett rushed for more than 100 yards in the Highlanders’ 38-12 victory over San Lorenzo on Nov. 1.

  • Bryce Grandison, Bishop O’Dowd football — The senior rushed for three touchdowns in the Dragons’ 40-0 victory over Encinal on Oct. 30.
  • Armand Shyne, Skyline football — Shyne rushed for a team-high 74 yards and the team’s lone touchdown on a 26-yard run in a 40-8 loss to McClymonds on Oct. 31.
  • Melissa Yao, Alameda girls golf — Yao shot a score of seven-over 78 to lead the Hornets to third place in the NCS Division I Tournament of Champions on Nov. 3 and a qualifying team spot in the CIF Northern California Regional tournament on Nov. 10 in Salinas.
