Dougherty Valley ace Kim stars at NorCal

  • Dougherty Valley High junior Yoonhee Kim took first place at the CIF NorCal Regional golf tournament on Nov. 10, winning a two-person, sudden-death playoff after shooting a 2-under 70 at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch in Salinas. Kim led the Wildcats to a runner-up team finish with a five-player score of 408, one spot ahead of Monte Vista (423). The Wildcats and Mustangs advanced to the state championships, which were set for Nov. 18 at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.

    Wolves wallop Colts

  • The San Ramon Valley football team rode the hot hand of quarterback Zack Baker and a strong secondary to a 34-16 win over host James Logan on Nov. 14 in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs. The Wolves (7-4) started fast in both halves in avenging a 28-23 loss to the Colts (8-3) in the regular season. Carter Nichols had a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Austin French had an interception. Will Kilty booted two field goals. The No. 9 seeded Wolves will travel to No. 1 De La Salle (10-0) on Friday in the quarterfinals.

    California football rolls past Patriots

  • Osaru Ona rushed for 125 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns as No. 4 seeded California (8-3) cruised past Heritage 45-13 in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs on Nov. 14. Simi Hingano and Cameron Norfleet also ran for scores, Ryan Groleau caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jacob Wooldridge and Spencer Thompson-Meyers made a 45-yard field goal for California. The Grizzlies will host No. 5 Liberty (9-2) in the quarterfinals on Nov. 22. The Lions beat No. 12 Amador Valley 33-14. California is vying to reach at least the semifinals for the fourth straight season.

    Granada rides Payne to NCS Div. II win

  • Robert Payne ran for 199 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries as the No. 10-seeded Granada football team (3-8) routed host No. 7 Northgate (5-6) 55-20 in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs on Nov. 15. The Matadors amassed 432 yards on 40 carries. Granada will face host No. 1 Concord (10-1) in the quarterfinals on Nov. 21.

  • Liberty at California, football, Nov. 21, 7 p.m. — The Grizzlies, a perennial section power, will host a rising star in the Lions, coming off their first NCS football win in school history.
  • Antioch at Foothill, football, Nov. 21, 7 p.m. — The EBAL co-champion Falcons (8-2), seeded second, will face the upstart No. 10 Panthers (7-4), led by phenom Najee Harris, one of the country’s top sophomore prospects, who ran for 371 yards and four touchdowns in a 50-26 win over San Leandro.
  • NCS Division I, volleyball, Nov. 22, 7 p.m. — With three of the four semifinalists, the EBAL is guaranteed to have at least one team in the finals.

    Stars of the week

  • Jenna Bloom, Monte Vista tennis — Bloom, a sophomore, beat Taylor James 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles as the Mustangs earned a 4-3 win over Miramonte on Nov. 15 in the NCS Division I team championship.

  • Hailey Lindberg, Monte Vista volleyball — Lindberg had eight kills, 10 digs, 21 service points and four aces as the Mustangs (28-6) beat Mission San Jose 25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 25-8 in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on Nov. 15.

  • Carter Nichols, San Ramon Valley football — Nichols had a huge game in the secondary, including a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown, in the Wolves’ Nov. 14 NCS win over James Logan.

  • Robert Payne, Granada football — Payne ran for 199 yards and four touchdowns in the Matadors’ 55-20 win Nov. 15 over Northgate.
