Dougherty Valley beats California

  • Austin Fadal had a game-high 27 points and Jushan Samra had 21 as the Dougherty Valley boys basketball team beat California 81-60 on Nov. 29 to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Wildcats broke the game open with a 26-11 run over the fourth quarter. Collin Alexander led the Grizzlies, who were playing in their season opener, with 20 points.

    Cowboys’ Crose 16th in state cross country

  • Livermore High senior Jackson Crose finished 16th in the CIF state cross country Division II boys championship race on Nov. 29, with a time of 15 minutes, 36 seconds over the 3.1-mile course at Woodward Park in Fresno. Crose enjoyed a stellar season with victories in the Monte Vista Invitational, Lowell Invitational, Lagoon Valley Classic, and Pacific Tiger High School Invitational. He was the top East Bay Athletic League male finisher at the state meet.

    Mats’ McCandless eighth at state meet

  • Granada junior Megan McCandless took eighth place in the CIF State Cross Country Division II Girls Championship, with a time of 18:04. McCandless enjoyed an excellent season with wins at the EBAL, North Coast Section, Scott Bauhs Harrier Invitational and Ed Sias Invitational, along with a winner-up finish at the De La Salle/Carondelet Nike Invitational.

  • Pittsburg vs. De La Salle, football, Dec. 6, 7 p.m. — The No. 3 seeded Pirates will challenge the No. 1 Spartans at Dublin High. De La Salle is seeking its 23rd consecutive NCS title.

  • Katherine Claybaugh, San Ramon Valley volleyball — Claybaugh had 27 kills, 11 digs and 4.5 blocks overall for the Wolves in their two NorCal playoff games.
  • Meredith Corda, Monte Vista cross country– Corda followed her title in the NCS Division I race with a solid 27th-place finish at the CIF state meet Division I in a time of 18:44.
  • Kelly Strand, Monte Vista volleyball — Strand gave an inspired effort with 14 digs in a loss to Homestead-Cupertino in the NorCal playoffs.

  • Jacob Wooldridge, California football — He passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns in the No. 4 seeded Grizzlies’ 45-17 loss to No. 1 De La Salle in the NCS Division I semifinals on Nov. 28.

  • Megan McCandless, Granada cross country — The junior was the EBAL’s top overall finisher at the CIF state meet with an eighth-place finish.
  • Ruben Mercado, Foothill football — The athletic junior had 11 receptions for 121 yards in a loss to Pittsburg in the NCS Division I semifinals, and led the Falcons in total receptions this season.
