RICHMOND — A man robbed Monday morning was unharmed when shots were fired as he chased his assailant, but the gunfire apparently hit another man inside a nearby home, police said Tuesday.
The chaos unfolded Monday morning just after 11:30 a.m. and ended with 23-year-old Tavio Sanders in custody, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. Police arrested Sanders on suspicion of robbery, she said.
Police received several calls and Shot Spotter technology also notified them of gunfire in the 2700 block of Oxford Avenue around 11:40 a.m., Abetkov said. Officers were en route when they received another call about a car crash near Shane Drive and Loyola Drive and a fight between two men, she said.
By the time officers arrived, only one of the men was still there, Abetkov said. He told police that he had been robbed by the man he was fighting.
Police searched the area and found Sanders in the backyard of a home in the 2800 block of Devon Way, Abetkov said. They also found shell casings in the 3100 block of Birmingham Drive just about the time a man living in that block arrived at the Doctors Medical Center emergency room, she said.
That man suffered a graze wound either from a bullet or from debris left over from one, Abetkov said. The injuries were not life-threatening. The man was in the upstairs unit of a duplex when he was injured, she said.
According to police, the shots that appear to have created the man’s injury came while one of the victims chased his attacker, Abetkov said. Shots came from the vehicle used for the getaway, Abetkov said, but the victim continued to chase him, leading to the crash and fight, she said.
The victim told police that two people were in the car he chased, but Abetkov said police were still determining whether Sanders allegedly acted alone or had accomplices.
