Pacifica Performances presents

Posted on December 2, 2014

The Curios winter concert, a Pacifica tradition

Pacifica Performances is pleased to present The Curios Winter Concert, their 17th annual at The Mildred Owen Concert Hall Dec. 6, doors at 7 p.m., show starting at 7:30 p.m.

At the beginning of The Curios winter concert, singer/songwriter Nancy Hall always asks folks to raise their hands if it is their “first time,” and a few dozen hands go up. Then she asks “how many of you have been here since the beginning?” and a surprising number of hands also go up, accompanied by a loud “whoooop!”

The band is always changing but at its core are longtime musical collaborators Nancy Hall and Lee Parvin. Special Guests this year include renown guitarist Michael Tyler as well as local singer and songwriter Nomi Harper.

The Curios perform engaging original music with a couple of covers thrown in.

Broadly one might call it “acoustic-based rock” or “eclectic Americana.” What they do best is move the audience to shouts, tears, dancing and everything in between. Hall and Parvin are probably best known for their stirring and beautiful harmony singing.

“We started singing together when I was 19,” says Hall. “We are practically telepathic with each other at this point.” Northern California Songwriter has called The Curios style a “wonderfully eclectic, quirky and beautifully complex musical universe.” This year’s concert is described by the band as being a more intimate sound, focused on duets and debuting new writing, from delicate to rocking.

She and Parvin, both longtime Pacificans, made their careers working with some high profile acts both in the Studio and touring. From Neil Young to Taj Mahal, Michael Bloomfield, Randy Jackson, Vicki Randal and many others, their collective discography is impressive. With Hall on various stringed instruments including ukulele and dulcimer and Parvin on all the keyboards including accordion, the music takes the listener on an unpredictable journey. It’s a journey that many want to take again and again, so get your tickets early…this show generally sells out!

Presented by Pacifica Performances at their Mildred Owen Concert Hall located at The Pacifica Center for the Arts (formerly the Sanchez Art Center ) 1220 Linda Mar Blvd. in Pacifica.
