These were the stories that were making headlines in the pages of the Milpitas Post this fourth week of November 50, 40, 30, 20 and 10 years ago.
1964 Bob McGuire will assume the job as first professional parks and recreation director for the city. He comes to Milpitas after six years in San Leandro. He earlier worked in recreation services at Oakland after coming west from Minnesota.
1974 A new dial-a-ride service begins this week with a special 25-passenger bus operated by the Valley Transportation Authority. Fare for the pick up and delivery service will be 25 cents for ages 18 to 64. All others will pay 10 cents.
1984 A growth of student enrollment beyond what was forecast will enable Milpitas schools to end the year with a small surplus. Lease of an unused school site also helped the budget.
1994 School trustee William Foulk won re-election and newcomers Marsha Grilli and Steve Munzel will join the Milpitas school board, voters decided. City voters also decreed overwhelmingly that members of the planning commission need to be registered voters and thus citizens.
2004 The Great Mall said a quiet farewell to the Van’s Skateboard Park, one of the few indoor parks in the nation. The space will become a Kohl’s department store.
