When a service line failed entering an 8-inch main on Carnegie Drive Monday afternoon, it caused an upsurge of water through a front yard and filled the street with silt and muddy water up to car doors.
The break was reported at about 1:30 p.m. on the 400 block of Carnegie Drive, near Edsel Drive.
Milpitas Public Works Department crews toiled until about 9:30 p.m. to restore water service to the 25 homes impacted. They remained on scene until 1:30 a.m. trying to remove mud and silt from nearby streets, and returned Tuesday morning to finish the mop up, said Steven Machida, acting public works director/engineer.
There were no reports of muddy water entering homes, though it did rise high enough to meet the undercarriage of some cars.
The exact cause of the break is not known.
Some residents complained of murky water coming from their faucets after the service restoration, Machida said. He advised residents to run their taps until the cloudy water dissipates.
City of Milpitas ordered tests of water Monday to ensure its safety, but it sometimes takes three days to receive results to verify the quality, Machida said.
