El Cerrito police log: Pair posing as utility workers steal $7,000 from elderly couple; motorized shopping cart full of meat stolen

Friday, Dec. 5

  • WEAPON POSSESSION — An Alameda man, 26, was arrested after he was found with brass knuckles during a morning traffic stop at San Pablo Avenue and Moeser Lane.
  • INJURY COLLISION — At 2:45 p.m. a nearby officer heard and responded to a collision on San Pablo Avenue at Moeser Lane between an AC Transit bus and two vehicles. A bus passenger and the driver of one of the vehicles were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
  • POSSESSION — An unwanted person was reported at El Cerrito Plaza at 6:45 p.m. A 36-year-old man was located and arrested when a search turned up a controlled substance.
  • DUI — A 57-year-old man was arrested just before midnight at San Pablo and Burlingame avenues for driving under the influence.
  • WARRANT — A 44-year-old man in a 1:15 a.m. pedestrian stop at Baxter Creek was arrested for an outstanding warrant.
  • WARRANT — An unwanted person was reported in the 6000 block of Potrero Avenue at 1:20 a.m. The man, 30, was determined to have an outstanding warrant and was arrested.

    Saturday, Dec. 6

  • POSSESSION — An Antioch man, 39, was arrested during a 2 p.m. pedestrian stop at San Pablo and Madison avenues for possession of suspected methamphetamine.
  • SHOPLIFTING — Pier One Imports at El Cerrito Plaza reported the 3 p.m. theft of a chair and two pillows from the front of the store. The suspect fled in a red SUV, but an employee recorded its license plate number, which was registered in San Rafael. Police there were notified and went to the address, where “the suspect was unloading items from her car into the home. The suspect ran inside and refused to come out of the house.” San Rafael officers finally convinced her to come out, “but then she began to resist the officers and was taken into custody.” The woman, 50, had an outstanding Sonoma County warrant for violating her probation. One of the stolen pillows was recovered.
  • BURGLARY — A theft was reported around 6 p.m. at El Cerrito Plaza. A 21-year-old man located by officers behind the business had an outstanding warrant. He was also determined intoxicated taken to the hospital because of his condition.

    Sunday, Dec. 7

  • PETTY THEFT — A wallet was reported stolen from the baby seat of a shopping cart at Safeway around noon. One credit card was immediately used at Safeway and another was later used at a Pinole store.
  • POSSESSION — A Richmond man, 50, was arrested during a 3 p.m. traffic stop for possession of a controlled substance. He was also driving while unlicensed and on probation. A woman passenger, 31, was also on probation. A search of the two turned up suspected methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana packaged for sale. A replica black semi automatic pistol was also found in the car.
  • WARRANT — A man, 52, was arrested during a 7:30 p.m. pedestrian stop at 11565 San Pablo Ave. for an outstanding warrant.
  • POSSESSION — A suspicious person was reported at 8:45 p.m. inside a business at 11450 San Pablo Ave. The man, 27, was arrested when a search turned up a stolen bottle of beer and a controlled substance.
  • DUI, POSSESSION — A man was reported slumped over the wheel of his vehicle at 10 p.m. at San Pablo and Central avenues. Officers determined the 65-year-old male was driving under the influence and also found a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

    Monday, Dec. 8

  • THEFT — A 2015 registration tag was reported stolen off a vehicle in the 1900 block of Key Boulevard.
  • THEFT — A license plate was reported stolen overnight from a vehicle in the 11000 block of San Pablo Avenue.
  • STRONG ARM ROBBERY — Just before midnight a woman carrying purchases into her home in the 2300 block of Mono Avenue was robbed by three men who placed her in a choke hold.

    Tuesday, Dec. 9

  • IDENTITY THEFT — Wells Fargo reported at 1 p.m. that someone was trying to withdraw money using a counterfeit credit card. Officers arrested a Fairfield woman, 24, and discovered she had more counterfeit credit cards and a list of credit card numbers.
  • BURGLARY — A fishing reel was stolen overnight from a Ford F-150 in the 7000 block of Cutting Boulevard.
  • INTOXICATION — A person was reported outside yelling in the 200 block of Carmel Avenue at 7:30 p.m. The 28 year-old homeless man was arrested for public intoxication, then taken to the hospital due to his condition.
  • PETTY THEFT — At 10 p.m. Lucky at El Cerrito Plaza reported the theft of a motorized shopping cart. “Officers located the cart abandoned at the Plaza BART station and found the responsible subject, a 50-year-old man on the BART platform. The man apparently used the motorized cart to drive out of the store with a bag full of unpaid for meat products.” The man was also on felony probation.

    Wednesday, Dec. 10

  • PETTY THEFT — A Richmond woman, 29, was identified and arrested after a 2:30 p.m. theft at Big 5 Sporting Goods. Officers also arrested her companion, a Richmond man, 26, on an outstanding warrant.
  • POSSESSION — A 41-year-old man was arrested at San Pablo and Wall avenues at 7:30 p.m. for possession of suspected methamphetamine.
  • WARRANT — A Richmond man, 51, was arrested at 10 p.m. in the 10900 block of San Pablo Avenue for an outstanding DUI warrant.
  • WARRANT — A 32-year-old Antioch woman was arrested at 10:45 p.m. in the 10900 block of San Pablo Avenue for an outstanding DUI warrant.
  • POSSESSION — A bicyclist stopped for a code violation at 11 p.m. at San Pablo Avenue and Moeser Lane was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine and a hypodermic needle.

    Thursday, Dec. 11

  • BURGLARY — A backpack was stolen from a BMW X3 after a window was broken between 10 and 10:15 a.m. at Peet’s Coffee.
  • ELDER ABUSE, BURGLARY — Two people wearing PG&E jackets told an elderly couple in the 1600 block of Richmond Street they were there to inspect the water meter. Once inside, one suspect distracted the couple while the second stole more than $7,000 in jewelry and cash from a bedroom.
  • WARRANT — An El Cerrito man, 50, was arrested on a DUI warrant on Central Avenue at Interstate 80 at 3 p.m.
  • BURGLARY — At 6:20 p.m. the window of a 2015 GMC Yukon rental car at 5920 Cutting Blvd. was smashed and laptops, wallets and currency were stolen. The victims were tourists from Denmark preparing to drive to Oregon.
  • BURGLARY — The window of a Kia Soul at 11450 San Pablo Ave. was smashed and a backpack was stolen.
