Cupertino council to take final vote on General Plan, housing element Tuesday night

Posted on December 2, 2014

A much-anticipated discussion and final vote on the city of Cupertino General Plan amendment and housing element will take place Tuesday night starting at 6:45 p.m. at Cupertino Community Hall, 10350 Torre Ave. The meeting will also include discussion on the Vallco Shopping District.

Before the discussion, there will be a swearing-in ceremony at 6:30 p.m. for new council members Savita Vaidhyanathan and Darcy Paul, as well as the selection of a new mayor and vice mayor. Residents from the group BetterCupertino.org are planning to rally in front of city hall at 6 p.m.

Residents can also watch a live webcast of the Dec. 2 meeting online by visiting cupertino.org/webcast.

For 18 months, the city has been planning and working on an update to its General Plan with aims of replenishing dwindling office space allocation, setting aside more hotel space in the city, identifying locations for potential housing and studying portions of the city for revitalization.

However, an issue with noticing came to light Nov. 10 and as a result, the council delayed final action until Dec. 2. The Nov. 10 public hearing featured more than 60 speakers and a community hall packed beyond capacity with a public eager to go forward with the meeting and speak out, but the city opted to continue to hold off on a final vote.

Concern over the error from the public and council was enough for city staff and council members to agree to continue the Nov. 10 meeting just after the 5 a.m. straw vote.
