‘Billions’ Season 5 returns, plus the premiere of ‘American Rust’

September 5 marks the return of Billions. In the second half of season 5, Chuck Rhoades’ (Paul Giamatti) fight against Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) continues. Chuck has a potential ally in the form of billionaire Mike Prince (Corey Stoll), whose presence sends ripples through Axe Capital. Alliances will form and shift throughout the rest of the season as the conflict comes close to destroying everyone involved.

American Rust premieres September 12. Based on a novel by Philipp Meyer, Daniels stars as the chief of police in a Pennsylvania rust belt town. When the son of the woman he loves (Tierney) is accused of murder, he has to decide what lengths he’s willing to go to in order to protect her.

Back to Life Season 2 premieres September 13. The British comedy-drama picks up three weeks after the season 1 finale and six weeks after Miri’s (Daisy Haggard) release from prison. She’s optimistic about her future, but when a grieving mother shows up in town, it’s clear that Miri won’t be able to escape her past.

Political docuseries The Circus returns September 19. New episodes offer a behind-the-scenes look at American politics during the first year of the Biden presidency.

Labor Day weekend brings the premiere of a new documentary about Rick James. Bitchin’: The Sound and Fury of Rick James “is an intimate yet propulsive look at Rick James, one of rock, funk and R&B’s most legendary and often underappreciated figures.” Through rare live footage, never-before-seen videos, interviews, and recorded conversations with James (who died in 2004), this movie presents a picture of James’ dramatic rise and subsequent fall. It premieres September 3.
