‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’: Animated ‘Witcher’ Prequel Follows Geralt of Rivia’s Teacher

Posted on August 28, 2021

Following the massive success of the first season of The Witcher, Netflix has even more excitement on the way for fans of the widely popular series this year. Before The Witcher even came to Netflix in December 2019, it was well-loved by fans of the video game franchise all over the world, and of the original fantasy series by Andrzej Sapkowski since the first book was originally published in Poland in the early 90’s.

To continue the Witcher story, we will likely see more of Geralt and Ciri in Kaer Morhen, where she will presumably begin training under Geralt’s mentorship and learn to wield her powers. Before we continue their story in The Witcher season two, however, Netflix will release an animated prequel film that sheds some light on the origin of the witchers and Geralt’s own teacher Vesemir in Nightmare of the Wolf.

What we know so far about ‘The Witcher’

In season one of The Witcher, we were introduced to the stony-faced, quick-witted witcher named Geralt of Rivia who travels between various kingdoms and villages, slaying monsters for coin. While we don’t learn too much about Geralt’s past in this season, we do know that he was abandoned by his mother as a child.

We also know he underwent training from the School of the Wolf, and received the mutations that ultimately turned him into a superhuman witcher that was genetically altered to fight monsters.

During the first season, the timeline jumps around a fair amount in order to cover the backstory of multiple main characters including Geralt (Henry Cavill), the sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan), the Child of Surprise.

While all three characters’ timelines begin to converge towards the end of the season, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding each character. While it’s not entirely clear how their fates all seem to be tied together by the season finale, there is definitely much of the story left to be discovered in the upcoming season.

The prequel ‘Nightmare of the Wolf’ will reveal the origin story of Vesemir

Nightmare of the Wolf will be an animated movie following the origin story of Vesemir, a witcher who later trains Geralt, becoming his mentor and something of a father figure to the white-haired witcher we recognize from Netflix’s Witcher series.

In the upcoming anime prequel, we will see Vesemir in his early years as he turns to monster hunting in order to escape poverty and a life of hardship. However, when a terrifying new enemy threatens the kingdom, “Vesemir finds himself on a frightening adventure that forces him to confront the demons of his past,” according to Deadline.

The prequel will follow Vesemir (Theo James), and according to IMDb, viewers will also be introduced to new characters Tetra (Lara Pulver), Deglan (Graham McTavish), and Lady Zerbst (Mary McDonnell).

Because of the timeline for Nightmare of the Wolf, it’s unlikely that Cavill will appear as Geralt in the upcoming animated film. However, fans of the beloved character Geralt of Rivia can look forward to continuing his adventure when season two premieres on Netflix later this year.

“To slay a beast, you first got to understand it, study it, find its weakness.”

Fans can expect two upcoming releases for ‘The Witcher’ on Netflix in 2021

You can catch both the upcoming animated prequel film and season two of The Witcher exclusively on Netflix. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf premiered globally on August 23.

For fans waiting eagerly for the release of season two, we can look forward to catching up with Geralt and his adventures on December 17.
