‘The Other Two’ Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: ‘Chase Goes to College’

After two and a half years, The Other Two is back for its second season. The show, which focuses on a family suddenly embroiled in show business, has a new home on HBO Max. On Aug. 26, 2021, it dropped the first two episodes of season 2. The show picks right back up with the Dubek siblings in their unending quest for peripheral fame.

ChaseDreams goes to college in ‘The Other Two’ Season 2

Like the first episode of season 1, The Other Two Season 2 opens on an interview with Chase (Case Walker). This time, instead of Good Morning America, it’s Pat’s (Molly Shannon) own, catchphrase-heavy daytime talk show. According to her, this is Chase’s final interview. He’s abandoning his music career to enroll in New York University. He’s still 14, but with fame, anything’s possible.

Chase’s retirement has capsized both Brooke’s (Heléne Yorke) and Cary’s (Drew Tarver) careers. Instead of managing Chase’s music, Brooke is scouring TikTok and commenting, “move to New York, I’ll represent you” on every singing video. Cary, who nearly starred in a Netflix series alongside his younger brother, is now an online host for everything from Age, Net Worth, Feet to The Daily Bite, sponsored by Bagel Bites.

Pat’s pride in her children never wavers. On her hugely successful talk show, she has a daily segment where she Facetimes her adult children live on air to “see what they’re up to.”

Brooke attempts to break out on her own

Though Brooke could work as Pat’s manager, she wants to avoid daytime talk shows and work in the more glamorous world of music management. The problem, of course, is that she has no one to manage.

In the first episode, she listens to individual renditions of “Happy Birthday” from every guest at an old friend’s child’s party. When that, inevitably, doesn’t find her the next big teen star, she drives to Queens to find a preteen TikToker. Her reaction when his family doesn’t know about the videos — throwing up into their bushes — hints that she’s not quite ready to make it out on her own.

Cary has a new relationship in ‘The Other Two’ Season 2

Cary, meanwhile, grows increasingly frustrated that his hosting jobs aren’t real acting. After each gig, he runs back to the store to return one dress shirt and replace it with another.

He does have a new romance in his life, though. While they’ve only been together for two weeks, Pat has already told her audience all about Jess (Gideon Glick), who is potentially Cary’s boyfriend.

The new relationship appears to have given Cary increased comfort in his sexuality. While he initially tells a delivery driver that Jess is a girl, Cary runs outside in his underwear to correct himself.

“As soon as I opened the door, I knew you were gay,” the driver says. “Cause I watch your mom’s show.”

The Dubek family meets at Blake Lively’s new restaurant

With Pat’s new job comes new connections, so Brooke, Cary, and Jess go to meet her at the opening of Blake Lively’s new Thai-infusion restaurant. Inside, the waiters hold plates of spaghetti and assure the family that the restaurant concept “isn’t racist.”

Pat, drinking from two separate cups of coffee, goes over her lengthy daily routine. She wakes up at 11 p.m. and heads to work, where she sits for five and a half hours of makeup. “For women over 50, it’s technically applied by a carpenter,” she tells Cary.

When Brooke arrives, she tells Pat that she wants to work as her co-manager since Chase is busy at school. But, as it turns out, he isn’t. According to Chase, he’s dropped out of NYU to continue his music career. Through social media, though, Cary and Brooke learn that his decision had more to do with the fact that other students were ridiculing him.

Now, instead of having no clients, Brooke is co-managing both Pat and Chase. She hates daytime shows and doesn’t think that Chase can sing, but it’s still a step up.

Per TVLine, HBO Max will drop new episodes of The Other Two every Thursday.
