Viewers who’ve kept up with the Shelby family for the past several years can’t wait to see how the TV show ends with Peaky Blinders Season 6. So far, we’ve seen Thomas Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) navigate difficult family and political circumstances. And in season 5, someone deeply betrayed Tommy — though we’re unsure of who. When talking about season 5, director Anthony Byrne noted Michael Gray is currently set up to become the “enemy” against Tommy in the future. Here’s what he mentioned.
Who betrayed Tommy Shelby in ‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 5? Fans suspect Michael Gray did
At the end of season 5, fans saw major trouble for Tommy and the rest of the Shelby family. Tommy created the perfect scenario to kill his “frenemy” Oswald Mosley. Mosley hoped to bring fascism to the forefront, and Tommy enlisted his World War II friend, Barney Thompson, to snipe Mosley during an impassioned public speech. Unfortunately, someone got to Barney first, killing him and leaving Mosley totally unscathed and unaware.
So, who ruined Tommy’s plot? So far, it’s unclear, though fans have plenty of guesses based on the number of enemies Tommy’s accrued. Finn Cole plays Michael, and he talked about whether Michael was the one to foil the plan as well as what may come up in Peaky Blinders Season 6.
“He could be the one who betrayed Tommy, but there are a number of other candidates,” Cole told NME. “I think going up against Tommy would probably be a mistake. I hope [Michael] doesn’t betray the family too much because people really didn’t like it last time.”
Director Anthony Byrne said Michael is set to become the ‘enemy’
It looks like season 5 director Byrne has some opinions regarding where the storyline with Michael may go in Peaky Blinders Season 6. Byrne and Sam Claflin, the actor playing Mosley, spoke on BBC’s podcast, Obsessed With … about the show. And the topic of Tommy’s betrayal came up. The podcast host asked Byrne if Michael is the “enemy now” given the possible foiling of Tommy’s plot.
“It’s certainly set up that way,” Byrne noted of Michael being an enemy of Tommy’s. “That’s very much at the forefront of what we’re kind of heading into.”
Byrne also commented on Mosley’s relationship with Gina Gray, Michael’s suspicious wife who may plot to overthrow Tommy. In season 5, Mosley and Gina exchange a knowing glance. “I love that moment,” Byrne added. “That whole sequence is just … it’s all visual, you know? It’s people looking at each other. … I prefer that as a viewer because it allows you to project exactly what you’re trying to suggest. … It’s more fun to kind of watch those moments where people are kind of looking at each other.”
Is ‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 6 the last?
So, will fans actually get a conclusive ending to the Shelby storyline with Peaky Blinders Season 6? It seems this season is certainly the last. While show creators originally wanted to have more seasons, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic threw a twist into production.
“This final season of our beloved Peaky Blinders is going to be the best one yet,” executive producer Caryn Mandabach explained to Deadline. “Steve’s [Knight] uncanny ability to be prescient about world events is only matched by his ability to make Tommy Shelby the most indelible character of our times.”
