Fans can’t wait to see Peaky Blinders Season 6, the final season of the epic series. Through the last five seasons of the TV series, we’ve watched how the Shelby family navigates politics, money, and relationships in Birmingham, England, between World War I and World War II. And it seems creator Steven Knight considered adding a “supernatural” twist that will affect Thomas Shelby in season 6.
[Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for Peaky Blinders Season 5 and potentially season 6.]
Is Tommy Shelby mentally ill? He deals with the effects of World War I
Fans anticipating Peaky Blinders Season 6 know Tommy’s troubled mental state. Tommy and a few of his brothers fought in World War I. Each season gives viewers a deeper glimpse into what fighting through the war was like for the Shelby boys. In one particular flashback, viewers see Tommy tunnelling behind enemy lines. Eventually, the enemies found him and attacked his unit.
It’s clear Tommy deals with post-traumatic stress disorder, which seems to hit a fever pitch with the death of his wife, Grace. Danny Whizz-Bang, one of Tommy’s friends from the war whom fans meet in season 5, also had PTSD.
“He is an extraordinary character who is effectively suffering from chronic PTSD that has never been identified or treated,” Tommy Shelby actor Cillian Murphy explained to Metro. “He’s also fiercely intelligent. So when you meet him in series 5, he’s been living with this for however many years — 10 I think, but he’s never dealt with it, and I think all of those issues are coming to fruition.”
‘Peaky Blinders’ creator said the new season could have a ‘supernatural element’
Fans continue to get an in-depth look into Tommy’s mind with each season. At the end of season 5, someone betrays Tommy, resulting in a failed assassination attempt of Oswald Mosley. Tommy then walks into the mist, distraught by the failure of his plan. He sees the ghost of Grace in the mist.
“The works all done, Tommy,” Grace tells him. “It’s all done. We can walk away from all of this. It’s so easy.” Then, Tommy screams and holds a gun to his head before the scene cuts.
Given the nebulous ending, Metro reports Knight said he wanted to explore the supernatural side of whether Tommy’s cursed in Peaky Blinders Season 6. “‘I like the supernatural element,” Knight said. “’Is Tommy cursed?’ In other words, is everything predestined, are lives already mapped out? Do you have free will or not? Tommy sometimes feels that he doesn’t because it seems that everything is destined to stop him or move him in a particular direction. It’s the same with the whole family. I explore that more in the next series.”
Is ‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 6 being filmed?
So, is filming currently going on for Peaky Blinders Season 6? It seems production actually completed filming back in May 2021.
“It’s a wrap!” the show’s official Twitter page announced on May 28, 2021. “Huge thanks to the cast and crew of #PeakyBlinders Season 6. You’ve given this one everything. And it’s going to be epic.”
So far, the BBC and Netflix haven’t made any official comment on when the show will return. Fans would love to see the new season before the end of 2021 or by the beginning of 2022. That gives post-production about six months to finish up and prep for a premiere.
