Finn Wittrock Said This ‘American Horror Story’ Scene Was the Hardest to Film

Posted on August 29, 2021

American Horror Story has 10 seasons dedicated to terrifying viewers. Sometimes, though, the FX show scares its actors as well. Many of the cast members have appeared on multiple seasons and may be able to list more than one scarring scene. Series alum Finn Wittrock said one particular scene was hardest to film.

Finn Wittrock has appeared on multiple seasons of ‘American Horror Story

Wittrock has appeared in five of the series’ 10 seasons. Though each season takes on an entirely new topic, many of the actors return to the anthology series. His first role was in the fourth season, Freak Show. In it, he plays a wealthy, spoiled young man named Dandy Mott, who becomes entranced by the performers at Fräulein Elsa’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

In season 5, Hotel, Wittrock plays an audacious model, Tristan Duffy, who meets The Countess (Lady Gaga). She turns him into a vampire, and the two begin a relationship.

The sixth season, Roanoke, sees Wittrock in a more minor role. He plays Jether Polk, a member of the violent Polk family. He plans to follow in his family’s footsteps by killing a person.

After a two-season break, Wittrock appeared in season 9, 1984. In it, he had a one-episode arc as Bobby Richter, a member of a family tethered to a summer camp by tragedy.

Wittrock is also set to appear in the newest season, American Horror Story: Double Feature.

Wittrock has been in a number of disturbing scenes on the series, but one in particular left him questioning his role in the franchise.

Wittrock told Popsugar that the American Horror Story moment came during Freak Show when Dandy Mott shot most of the performers. In the scene, Dandy Mott murders much of the troupe after they quit.

“That was actually the one day that I walked home like, ‘Oh, I really hate myself and don’t wanna do this.’ I felt really despondent.”

His approach to portraying the character created a sort of closeness to the villainous character.

“I have to get under his skin. I always go for the vulnerability first and let the evil actions take care of themselves. You don’t have to act demonic when you’re cutting off someone’s arm,” he told IndieWire.

The tenth season, American Horror Story: Double Feature, has two parts. One takes place by the sea, and one in the desert.

Wittrock will star in the first half of the season, “Red Tide.” In it, he plays a screenwriter who moves to Provincetown to remedy his writer’s block. The town’s residents say that the place sparks inspiration. It’s not without its disturbing, sharp-toothed quirks, however.

Viewers can watch Double Feature Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
