Steven admits that he’s ‘fallen short’ of the Mormon Church’s standards
In the episode that aired on August 28th, Steven talked about how important his Mormon faith is. He said, “My faith has always been superbly important to me.” At first, Alina was scared of the Mormon church due to the stigma in Russia as it being a “cult.” She has since opened up to the idea and is even doing her own research. However, Steven did mention that if Alina failed to convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints faith, their relationship likely wouldn’t work out.
Later in the episode, Steven confessed that he’d made mistakes in the past. He said, “I’m the best example of a church member that she knows, but I haven’t lived a perfect life.” He revealed that he hasn’t opened up to his fiancée about it yet. Steven continued, “Up until this point, I haven’t been totally candid with her. I’ve fallen short of the standards of the church. And I’m afraid that when I reveal these things to her that it’ll make her doubt everything I’ve ever told her.”

So what could Steven’s big secret be? 90 Day Fiancé fans are taking to Reddit to speculate about what Steven’s shortcomings could be, especially concerning his Mormon faith. One Reddit user, who happened to be a former LDS member, opened up the discussion about what Steven could be hiding. They wrote, “What do you think his ~secret~ is? My non-Mormon husband immediately gave me the side-eye when he heard that part and was like, ‘what could be so bad that he’s not a worthy church member?’”
They speculated, “All I could tell my husband was ‘not an active tithing payer, which she wouldn’t care about; porn problem; not a virgin.’” One user commented, “I also grew up in the LDS church. His ~big secret~ is probably masturbating or something.” While masturbation isn’t listed as a sin in the updated Church Handbook, the current missionary handbook says it goes outside of the law of chastity. Also written in the law is viewing pornographic imagery and engaging in homosexuality.
Will Steven confessing to Alina ruin their 90 days together?
Whether his sin is sexual in nature or something more benign like not tithing on Sunday, it seems that he’s worried that his fiancée will be upset with his confession. So that begs the question, what would be considered “falling short” of LDS church standards that could also anger his Russian bride-to-be? Some fans think that cheating, whether emotionally or physically, could be something that would be considered bad in both worlds.
According to a description provided by TLC (via People), Steven’s confession will cause friction between the young couple. It reads, “Secrets of Steven’s past and Alina’s suspicions of infidelity begin to threaten their future together, and Alina questions if she truly knows the man she’s about to marry.”
