Eight Stacks: 1965 Ford GT40 Replica by CAV

Posted on February 17, 2017

This 1965 Ford GT40 replica is a 2000 CAV built in Cape Town, South Africa. CAV build good cars, and this one has nice details including a fairly accurate looking cabin and a roller cam, aluminum head 302, 5-speed, four-wheel discs, A/C, and a backup camera–the latter especially helpful when the rear-view mirror only shows eight injection trumpets. Find it here on Craigslist in Manitowoc, Wisconsin for $75k. Special thanks to BaT reader Eric B. for this submission.

Generally speaking, Superperformance is though to offer the most accurate looking GT40 replica, but CAV cars match or beat their quality while offering a bit more cabin space–very helpful in a design originally conceived for endurance racing in the 60’s. Overall, CAV’s shape and detailing is very good as well, and you’d probably need to park it next to a Superperformance or original in order to spot most differences.

Says the seller: “This two-owner car was built by CAV in 2000 and has been driven about 7,500 miles since. It spent the last 12 years in California where it received an SB100 smog exemption. It was repainted in 2015 and looks fantastic! Several other parts were recently replaced or freshened, including the Lexan engine cover. Also note the 15″ Halibrand style knock-off wheels all around, complete with safety wire.” The interior looks good too, and even if gauges aren’t right and the shifter is a bit off, overall controls look good with correct placement and general layout. Seats are pretty close to originals too, and A/C is a most welcome addition–note the tiny ventilation flaps.

Power comes from a roller rocker equipped 302 with aluminum heads and FAST electronic fuel injection (note the system’s multifunction monitor/touchscreen control center mounted near the driver’s A-pillar in the above interior shot), and the seller says its bunch-of-snakes headers sound like “pure evil.” Fabrication quality appears to be quite good, and those stacks look amazing poking through the rear clamshell’s little Lexan window.

Again, the seller: “The transaxle is a Getrag 5-speed unit. Brakes are discs all around with a power booster, while the manual steering rack is nice and tight. The suspension uses adjustable coilover shocks front and rear so you can easily adjust ride height to your preference. Cooling uses a very effective C&R aluminum radiator with dual electric fans controlled by the FAST module. This is not a car to be taken lightly. It demands your full attention while driving, as the slightest slip of your right foot could lead to trouble. So if you’re after a relaxing drive in the country then keep looking. But if you really want to stir your senses, you’ve found your car.”
