BaT Auction: Restored 1972 Porsche 911T Coupe

Posted on December 14, 2017

This 1972 Porsche 911T coupe was acquired by the seller from the original owner six years ago following a period of storage. A complete restoration was completed last month and included a bare-metal repaint in the original Aubergine, as well as installing a 911S steel front bumper and rocker trim. The suspension was overhauled with new shocks, struts, ball joints, tie-rods, bearings, seals, and several powder coated components. A new brake master cylinder was also installed along with new brake lines, pads, rotors, and rebuilt calipers. The 15″ Fuchs wheels were refurbished and fitted with new tires. The 2.4-liter flat-six and 5-speed manual transaxle were rebuilt prior to being reinstalled, and Weber 40IDA carburetors were added. A new flywheel, clutch plate, pressure plate, clutch cable, motor mounts, and throw-out bearing were installed, and the interior was prepped and treated with POR-15 before being fitted with new seat foam, seat covers, door panels, windshield, and more as detailed below. This 911 has also been aligned and corner balanced, and it is now being offered with restoration receipts and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The car was disassembled as part of the restoration, and the tub, fenders, hood, trunk lid, and doors were stripped to bare metal prior to being painted in the original Aubergine (025). All new door seals were installed and the rear bumpettes were re-chromed. Modifications to the body include a new steel 911S front bumper with spoiler, 911S rocker trim, and Hella halogen headlights. The deck lid grille was refurbished, and a new engine displacement badge was added along with new front and rear blinker buckets, seals, and lenses.

The 15″ Fuchs wheels were refinished with black painted centers and wear four new Dunlop tires. A brake system overhaul included a new master cylinder, brake lines, pads, a reservoir, rotors, and rebuilt calipers at all four corners. The suspension was disassembled and most pieces were powder coated black. The nuts and bolts were removed and re-zinced or cadmium plated per factory specification. New parts included brackets, nuts, bolts, washers, shocks, struts, ball joints, turbo tie-rods, bearings, seals, trailing arm bushings, and spring plate bushings, as well as others documented in the restoration receipts.

Prior to being restored, the floors were coated with satin black POR-15. Per the seller, the floor pans were rust free and the correct radio remains in place. Original parts include the front dash vinyl, arm rests, rear quarter window trim, and headlight rings. The headliner is reportedly the correct material and color per factory specifications. The odometer shows 52k miles and is believed to be accurate.
