BaT Auction: 1995 Dodge Viper Hennessey Venom 550

Posted on April 21, 2020

This 1995 Dodge Viper was first registered in Illinois and spent much of its life in California. Finished in Emerald Green over a gray leather interior, the car shows just over 40k miles and is powered by an aluminum 8.0-liter V10 paired with a six-speed manual transmission and a 3.54:1 rear differential. The car was modified by Hennessey Motorsports of Houston, Texas in 1997 with their Venom 550 package, including upgraded cylinder heads, a performance camshaft, enlarged throttle bodies, and a cold-air intake system. Additional modifications installed at that time consisted of a short-shifter, a Centerforce clutch, and an aluminum radiator. This Viper is offered by the selling dealer with Hennessey documentation, two tops and side curtains, a clean Carfax report, and a clean California title.

The car is finished in Emerald Green and is equipped with a factory side-exit exhaust system, which was discontinued after the 1995 model year. A body-colored hardtop is fitted, and an additional top and two sets of removable side curtains are reportedly included in the sale. White and yellow flashers are mounted behind the rear window glass.

Factory 17″ three-spoke wheels were recently mounted with new Michelin tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel vented discs, and the independent suspension incorporates unequal length cast aluminum A-arms at all four corners.

The cabin is upholstered in gray leather with black carpets and is equipped with a factory three-spoke steering wheel, leather shift knob, and an Alpine CD radio. The car was fitted with a short shift kit by Hennessey, and Venom 550 placards on the dash and passenger’s door jamb denote the serial #056. A control panel for the flasher and siren system is installed on the console.

Instrumentation includes a 180-mph speedometer, a tachometer with 6k-rpm redline, and a quartet of auxiliary gauges across the upper dash. 40k miles are shown on the mechanical odometer, approximately 500 of which were added by the selling dealer.

Power is provided by an aluminum 8.0-liter V10 paired with a six-speed Tremec T56 manual transmission. This example was fitted with the Hennessey Venom 550 package in 1997, which cost $22k and included Hennessey Venom cylinder heads with enlarged stainless steel valves, 1.7-ratio roller rocker arms, upgraded valvetrain components, a high-performance roller camshaft, a cold air induction system, and a 3.54 rear axle ratio. Hennessey claimed an output of 546 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque with this package. Per an included invoice from Hennessey Motorsports, the car was also fitted with an aluminum radiator and a heavy-duty Centerforce clutch at that time.
