BaT Auction: 1991 Mazda RX-7 Convertible 5-Speed

Posted on December 16, 2017

This 1991 Mazda RX-7 shows 77k miles and is equipped with a naturally-aspirated 1.3-liter dual-rotor and a 5-speed manual transmission. The second generation model was the only RX-7 available as a convertible, and relatively few were produced from 1988 to 1991. This example is finished in white over black leather and was acquired earlier in 2017 by its seller, who describes it as a well optioned and low-mileage Series 5 FC. It is sold with a clean Carfax report, original manuals, and a clear Florida title in the seller’s name.

Bodywork included body-colored moldings and an aluminum hood for late FC convertibles. White paint is believed original by the seller and photographed in sun and shade below. A handful of small door dings were recently corrected by a paintless repair specialist, while occasional touched-up chips are said to remain. Mildly dished factory BBS basketweaves are mounted with fresh 15″ rubber at all four corners.

The convertible top features a removable roof and a powered soft rear panel with a heated glass window. The top is said to remain original and photos show it raised and lowered. A vinyl cover is also included for use when the top is stowed. As presented, the retractable headlamps sit flush when closed and factory fog lamps are mounted in the lower valance.

Black leather sport seats present well overall in photos, with light creasing and a small tear that has received professional repair as shown in a close-up photo below. The dash is shown to be free of cracks and carpeting is reportedly in good shape. Controls remain stock throughout including the leather-wrapped airbag wheel, binnacle-mounted knobs, and other orange-lettered switchgear.

Factory instrumentation includes a large central tach as well as a 6-digit odometer showing just over 77k miles, 2,000 of which have been added by the seller. A stock Pioneer CD player/tape deck is linked to optional, independently controlled headrest speakers. Air conditioning is equipped and working well per the seller. Additional amenities include cruise control as well as power windows and mirrors. The windshield wiper switch is noted as functional on only one speed.

The naturally aspirated 1.3-liter 13b rotary redlined at 8k rpm and put out 160 horsepower when new. The engine is said to run well with good oil pressure. Underhood items reportedly remain stock aside from a Tanabe strut brace and 10mm Magnecor ignition wires, which were installed along with fresh plugs 3k miles ago. New stock mufflers have also been fitted and an oil change was carried out within the past 200 miles.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission that operates as it should per the seller. The fully-independent suspension recently received new rear struts, while the four-wheel disc brakes use four-piston aluminum calipers up front and benefits from new pads and cross-drilled rotors all around. Stock non-drilled rotors are also included and described as being good condition.

The Carfax report dates from new and shows no accidents, thefts, or other issues through the car’s time in Florida, Texas, and Michigan. A receipt for the recent tire installation is included, while further service records were reportedly misplaced by the car’s previous owner. The sale includes an original owner’s manual and warranty book as shown below.
