This 1988 Italdesign Aztec was designed as a roadgoing version of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s 1988 Turin Motor Show prototype and is one of what is believed to have been 25 or fewer built during a planned 50-car production run. The car reportedly was built for Giugiaro himself as chassis #19 and was never finished, instead being stored disassembled in the United Kingdom for many years. The aluminum tub remains unpainted, and the bare cabin has been partially finished in black. No suspension or powertrain parts are included, but a number of body panels, windscreens, and various assemblies including wooden bucks and molds to form additional bodywork will accompany the sale. This Italdesign Aztec project is now offered in Texas with an included parts package outlined below as well as a bill of sale for the car and its parts.
The Aztec’s aluminum bodywork was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, and this bare shell features a rear decklid with curved glass.
Suspension and wheels are neither installed nor included. The chassis is shown in detail in the photo gallery below.
A number of removed body panels, exterior lighting assemblies, windscreens, and other components will accompany the sale.
The empty cabin exhibits exposed floorboards, chassis bracing, the center tunnel, and the rear firewall.
The left-hand side of the firewall features holes to accommodate a steering column and pedals.
Contemporary Aztecs were delivered with an Audi-sourced turbocharged 2.2-liter inline-five that was tuned by Motoren Technik Mayer (MTM) of Germany. Power was delivered to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle and Lancia differentials. In this example the rear firewall is lined in heat-reflective foil, and no powertrain components are included. Additional photos of the underside of the chassis are presented in the gallery below.
Various molds and wooden bucks to create additional bodywork as well as multiple windscreens, tinted Aztec glass, lighting assemblies, and other bodywork and hardware will accompany the sale and are shown below.
