This 1983 Mercedes-Benz 280GE is a European-market example that was sold new in Germany, and it was imported to the US in 2019 and recently acquired by the selling dealer. The truck was reportedly used as a fire response vehicle by the Weingarten Feuerwehr, and was modified with orange paint, reflective stripes, emergency lights, a siren, and a generator. Power comes from a 2.8-liter M110 inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case, and additional equipment includes a power take-off, front and rear locking differentials, 16″ steel wheels with Goodyear Wrangler tires, and a trailer hitch. This W460 is now offered at no reserve with a clean Michigan title.
Finished from the factory in Cream White (9001), this example was refinished in the orange livery of the Weingarten Feuerwehr in Southern Germany and is equipped with emergency lights, reflective stripes, a siren, Hella driving lights, a split rear bumper, splash guards, and a trailer hitch.
Silver-finished 16″ steel wheels are mounted with 245/75 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires that show date codes from 2011.
The cabin features seating for three and door panels trimmed in black vinyl with checkered cloth inserts, while the rear compartment is modified with a rack housing a generator, spot lights, and associated equipment. Additional features include a heater and overhead power connections in the rear. A factory-equipped PTO runs off of the transfer case, and is operated via a control lever adjacent to the transfer case lever.
The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 180-km/h speedometer, a tachometer, a combination gauge for fuel level and coolant temperature, and an analog clock. The five-digit odometer shows just over 38k kilometers (~24k miles). Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.8-liter M110 inline-six was factory rated at 156 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 167 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm when new, which is sent to all four wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and front and rear locking differentials. An oil and filter change was carried out prior to its importation according to the seller.
Additional photos showing the suspension, chassis, and driveline as well as underside corrosion are presented in the gallery.
