BaT Auction: 1977 Porsche 911S Targa

Posted on December 14, 2017

This 1977 Porsche 911S Targa was purchased by the current owner out of storage in 1996 with 45k miles and has since been driven regularly. It now shows 127k miles, and service documentation from the last two decades is described as extensive. The 2.7-liter flat-six was rebuilt in 2000, a new clutch was installed in 2015, new rear brake pads were recently fitted, and additional maintenance is described below. The car has been repainted in its original Sienna Metallic, and the front seats have also been reupholstered in tan leather. This 911 is now being offered on behalf of the current owner with a clean California title.

This 911S has been repainted in its original Sienna Brown, and it is also fitted with black rubber door protectors and polished rocker guards. Per the seller, the repaint shows flaws including clear coat chipping, chips in various places, some flaws in application, one spot on the hood that has a couple small lifting bubbles, and a few dings on the hood and door.

The 15″ Fuchs wheels show some finish imperfections near the wheel centers, and some wind noise is present from the edges of the targa top.

The front seats have been reupholstered, with perforated leather used for the seat centers. Stock vinyl is present on the rear seats, door panels, and other interior panels. A modern Sony single-DIN head unit has been added, and several large cracks are visible on the dash. Interior features are said to work correctly, though the pictogram is missing from the hazard switch.

Power comes from a CIS-injected 2.7-liter flat-six mated to a 915 5-speed manual transaxle. Service documentation from the current ownership is extensive, and a selection of invoices are provided in the gallery. The clutch, drive flange seals, shift seals, and sway bar bushings were replaced in mid 2015, and the air box was reconditioned in late 2015. The engine was rebuilt in 2000 with new bearings, cam sprockets, tensioners, and machined rotating assemblies. The seller notes a minor hesitation on slight throttle input and minor leaks from the drivetrain. Additionally, the owner is reported to remove the air pump belt after smog checks.
