BaT Auction: 1971 Porsche 914

Posted on September 21, 2021

This 1971 Porsche 914 was modified with a replacement 2.0-liter flat-four during prior ownership, and it was acquired by the seller in 2018 and subsequently refurbished. The exterior was refinished in metallic maroon, the seats were reupholstered with black vinyl and houndstooth cloth, the wheels were refinished, and the carpets, shift knob, and interior lighting were replaced. Equipment includes a five-speed manual transaxle, a removable roof panel, 15″ Mahle wheels, an aftermarket exhaust system, and a Bluetooth-enabled Custom Autosound stereo. Service since 2018 included overhauling the fuel, braking, and suspension systems, along with valve adjustment and fluid services. This 914 is now offered with service and refurbishment records, manufacturer’s literature, a tow bar, a top cover, spare and removed parts, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.

The exterior was refinished in metallic maroon during prior ownership and the bumpers were rechromed in 2018. Equipment includes a removable roof panel, halogen H4 headlights, integrated fog lights, and LED turn signals and brake lights. The seller notes that bodywork was performed with filler during prior ownership, and cracks and other flaws in the finish are shown in the gallery below.

Powder-coated 15″ Mahle wheels wear 195/60 Nokian eNTYRE tires that were mounted in 2018. The car is equipped with an adjustable front sway bar, 911 Turbo-specification tie rods, and Bilstein rear shocks. Maintenance performed during current ownership included replacing the master cylinder, brake lines, calipers, pads, front struts, and wheel bearings.

The cabin was refurbished in 2019 and features seats reupholstered in vinyl with houndstooth cloth inserts, and Dynamat sound-dampening material was installed under replacement black carpets. Additional equipment includes LED gauge and interior lighting, a 3D-printed shift knob, a center armrest with cupholders, a fire extinguisher, and a Bluetooth-enabled Custom Autosound stereo hooked to aftermarket speakers. The removed shift knob is included in the sale.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel is accented by red stitching and frames a 150-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 91k miles, approximately 10k of which were added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 2.0-liter flat-four was installed during prior ownership and is equipped with a high-torque mini starter, a PerTronix Ignitor III ignition system with a rev-limiter, and a Triad West exhaust system with stainless-steel heat exchangers. The gas tank was removed, cleaned, sealed, and powder coated, and the fuel pump was relocated to below the tank. Additional service during current ownership included replacing the cylinder head temperature sensor, drive belt, vacuum hoses, and fuel filters, and the valves were adjusted and an oil change was performed in July 2021. The battery has been relocated to the trunk, and the removed starter is included in the sale.
