BaT Auction: 1958 Porsche 356A 1600S Cabriolet w/ Hardtop

Posted on April 21, 2020

This 1958 Porsche 356A 1600S Cabriolet was completed in June 1958 and distributed new in the US through Max Hoffman in New York. Acquired by the seller five years ago, the car is powered by its numbers-matching 1.6-liter Super flat-four and also retains its original four-speed manual transaxle. Chassis 150551 is finished in yellow over crème leatherette and is believed to have originally been delivered with its current configuration of a removable hardtop and no soft top. This 356A is one of 1,382 cabriolets built for the model year and is now offered in Las Vegas, Nevada with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a copy of its Kardex, recent parts invoices, a recent appraisal, and a Montana title in the name of the seller’s LLC.

The Reutter cabriolet body wears an older repaint in yellow, though it was finished in black from the factory according to the Kardex. The factory hardtop has also been repainted in yellow, and a new hardtop seal was fitted in March 2020. The seller notes that in the photos the hardtop is laid on the car and not fully secured down. A beige top is referenced on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, though it does not specify which type of top. The car is not equipped with a soft top, and the seller states it is believed to have been optioned without one when new. A closeup of Reutter hardtop number 3340 is shown in the gallery below, along with images of the partial chassis number stamped on the engine lid and hood hinge.
