BaT Auction: 1957 Plymouth Fury

Posted on October 22, 2019

This 1957 Plymouth Fury was purchased new on June 24, 1957 through Goral Plymouth in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The original owner reportedly stored the car between 1976 and the second owner’s acquisition in 2006. A two-year rotisserie refurbishment was completed in 2008. The car has been driven less than 10 miles since the work was completed, and it was part of a private collection from 2013 until the selling dealer’s acquisition in October 2019. Power comes from a numbers-matching 318ci V8 with dual four-barrel carburetors paired with a push-button Torque-Flite three-speed automatic transmission. This Fury is now offered by Cascadia Classic in Portland, Oregon with factory manuals and brochures, a copy of the Chrysler production record, the factory Owner Service Certificate, the initial purchase receipt, a copy of the original title from when the car was sold to its second owner in 2006, and a clean Washington title.

The Plymouth Fury was offered solely as a two-door hardtop in 1957, and all were finished in Sand Dune White with gold trim. During the 2006–2008 refurbishment, this car was disassembled, put on a rotisserie, and repainted. Several in-process photos are included in the gallery below. Brightwork and trim were also redone, and the seller notes that the glass and weatherstripping were replaced.

Factory 14″ wheels with gold-accented chrome covers were mounted with new 8.00-section BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires in 2008.

The cabin has also been redone, and it features beige seating with textured cloth inserts complemented by brown carpeting and factory trim. The gold doorsill plates are further shown in the gallery.

Factory switchgear and instrumentation have been retained. Five buttons to the left of the steering wheel control the Torque-Flite three-speed automatic transmission. The analog clock is said to be inoperable. Pictures of the interior being refreshed are contained in the gallery.

Many Plymouth Furys from this era were special-ordered, and the dashboard plaque depicted above notes the original owner’s name.

A picture of the five-digit odometer during the 2008 refresh shows 87,285 miles. The odometer currently indicates 87,293 miles, with true mileage unknown.

During the refurbishment, the numbers-matching 318ci “poly” V8 was disassembled and rebuilt. The engine breathes through dual four-barrel Carter carburetors and produced 290 horsepower at 5,400 rpm when new. Additional images of the engine bay show the gold-finished air cleaners and valve covers, along with the body-number plate and other refinished components.
