BaT Auction: 1933 Riley Nine Lynx

Posted on September 21, 2018

This 1933 Riley Nine Lynx was reportedly imported into the US in 1997 before being acquired by the seller five years ago. Power is from a 1.1-liter inline-four, and modifications consist of an ENV pre-selector 4-speed manual transmission, center-locking wire wheels, and an electric fuel pump. Reportedly restored while it was owned by a single family in the UK from 1945 until 1985, this car is finished in grey and green over a green interior and is equipped with a folding windshield and a black top and side curtains. Maintenance during the seller’s ownership included new carburetor seals and a clutch replacement. This Lynx is now being offered with some spares, a tonneau cover, assorted literature, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

This Lynx features 2-door coachwork and a disappearing soft top that folds into its own covered compartment, two features only available in 1933. A restoration was performed prior to 1985 according to the seller, and the car is now finished in grey with green fenders and rubber-covered running boards. Paint flaws are noted and shown in detail in the gallery below, and the brightwork is said to show imperfections as well.

Center-locking 19″ wire wheels wear Waymaster tires. The seller notes that the wheels are not original to the car, as it came with bolt-on wire wheels from the factory. A spare wheel and tire are mounted at the rear, and this car is equipped with Hartford friction-disc shock absorbers.

The 4-place cabin is upholstered in green leather with green carpets and door panels. A folding windshield is present ahead of a curved, wind-deflecting dashboard that features a rearview mirror. This car is equipped with removable side curtains and a black top that is faded but usable per the seller, and photos of it fitted are available in the gallery below.

Jaeger instrumentation in the wooden dashboard includes an 85 mph speedometer and clock. The digit odometer shows just over 9k miles, about 500 which were added by the seller, and total mileage is unknown. The pressure-based fuel gauge is not functional, and the car is equipped with turn signals operated by a switch under the dash.

The 1.1-liter inline-four features twin camshafts in the block, hemispherical heads, twin SU carburetors, Scintella magneto ignition, and a 95mm stroke crankshaft running on two main bearings with a 60mm bore. Recent maintenance is said to include new carburetor seals and service to the choke linkage. The clutch assembly was reportedly replaced in 2015 with a first-generation Riley centrifugal unit that is said to shudder when cold. This car is equipped with an electric fuel pump, and the engine compartment features a storage box against the firewall.

An ENV pre-selector 4-speed manual transmission was reportedly installed by Riley restorer Barrie Gillies in place of the original “Silent Third” 4-speed unit. The seller describes an oil leak, and additional undercarriage photos can be found in the gallery below.

This car was featured in Mark Gillies’ The Golden Age of the Riley Motor Car: 1925-1938, a copy of which is included in the sale. A carburetor set, flywheel, clutch parts, black tonneau cover, and other assorted literature are included as well.
