4-Speed/4×4 Survivor: 1980 Toyota Pickup

Posted on September 21, 2018

This 1980 Toyota pickup is a desirable 4×4 4-speed single-cab that was originally special ordered from a Portland-area dealer according to the ad. The truck reportedly remained with its original owner until recently, mileage is given as a moderate 77k, and condition looks good throughout, including a surprisingly tidy cab, engine bay, and relatively unscathed bed under a seemingly lifelong-fitted cap with double, side-opening doors–the original tailgate is included as well. Sale also includes factory steelies mounted with winter rubber, as well as original manuals and books. We’d pull the cap, put the factory tailgate back on, and keep it clean while adding miles. Find it here on eBay in Clackamas, Oregon with reserve not met.

This color appears in manufacturer resources simply as Toyota Medium Blue, and saw use on other contemporary and previous models like the second-gen Hilux, FJ40 and FJ60 Land Cruisers. The listing doesn’t mention originality, but finish appears nice against panels that look straight and true. These trucks didn’t come with much trim from the factory, and the impact strip added to the rocker line is non-original. Bumpers are stock front and rear with a single tow hook visible on the passenger side, and suspension ride height seems close to factory as well, although yellow Bilstein dampers are pictured at all four corners, and wheels are aftermarket wearing moderately upsized tires.

Paint looks good along with lighting, while badging seems to be complete too. We aren’t usually fans of caps on pickups, but this period unit is cool for its coordinated colors, condition, and unusual dual-door configuration. As mentioned above, we’d probably pull it if the truck was ours, but wouldn’t fault the next owner for keeping it in place, either.

The bed floor shows slight evidence of use, but seems to be in nice condition as a whole. Here are the factory steelies, included with winter rubber.

The interior is particularly impressive, with unscathed looking plastic and vinyl upholstery everywhere the camera is pointed–even the floor looks good, and appreciable wear appears to be limited to the shift knob and shiny steering wheel rim. Weatherstripping shows well, mods look to be limited to a more modern stereo head unit, and though factory A/C is present, its functionality isn’t touched on.

The engine bay also looks great, and the 20R four was the main engine choice for model years 1970 through 1980. Maintenance and servicing over the last four decades isn’t touched on, but a number of the wear parts like hoses appear as though they may have been replaced recently.

Factory equipment included an Aisin 2bbl carb, and original output was 90 hp at 4800 rpm with 122 lb. ft. of torque peaking t 2400. Although a 5-speed would become available, this one runs a 4-speed which is mated to a gear-driven RF1A transfer case with low range.
