These three Toyota Sports 800’s are all listed on one of our favorite sources for finding interesting Japanese market used cars, the weirdly titled goo-net-exchange. It’s a massive site and can be quite frustrating to use, but is unparalleled for the glimpse it gives into a huge and varied classic car market rarely seen outside of Japan. We’ve featured a few of these rare and mechanically intriguing machines before, and as Toyota’s first production sports car they’re quickly becoming very valuable in the wake of their big brother 2000GT hitting the seven figure big leagues. The red car above is the earliest and nicest example, dating from 1965, the first year of production. It looks great inside and out, though the engine isn’t pictured as with the other two cars featured here. We like the banana spoke rims, again likely Watanabes, and the interior is particularly sharp with great upholstery, very clean dash, instrumentation, and switchgear, and an interesting zip-up panel that we imagine provides access to the luggage compartment. If we were in the market this one would be our pick of the bunch. Find it here in Kanagawa, Japan for $37,400.
The silver car is a slightly scruffy silver 1966 car. It looks mostly complete apart from some missing hub caps, and if those are the original wheels they’ve been painted black over their original silver or unpainted steel color. One downside of Goo is that there’s very little info given on cars apart from what can be gleamed from photos, and though this car shows only 4,301 kilometers on the odometer we’d guess it’s rolled over at some point. If it’s running and hides no rust, though, we’d have no problems cleaning it up a bit and using enjoying it as a driver. Find it here in Shimane, Japan with a name-your-price selling format.
This white example dates from 1968 and though showing a decent sized dent on the driver’s door looks to be in overall cleaner shape than its older, silver brother. The twin carb, air-cooled, 800 CC flat twin looks complete under the hood, and inside the dash also looks nicely preserved. We like the tiny little Watanabe wheels it wears, but the front ride height could use a bit of adjustment. We’re not sure if these cars came from the factory with body-colored Targa tops, as unlike this one most we’ve seen are painted black.
